Mohammad Rizwan is New Captain of Pakistan Cricket Team
Mohammad Rizwan has officially been appointed the new captain of Pakistan’s ODI and T20I cricket teams, taking over from Babar Azam, as confirmed by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). This decision came as part of Pakistan’s preparation for major upcoming tours in Australia and Zimbabwe, beginning in November 2024. The PCB highlighted Rizwan’s leadership abilities, particularly in domestic circuits, where he has successfully led the Multan Sultans to multiple PSL finals, winning the 2021 championship. Rizwan expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, promising to bring his dedication to his new role.
This leadership transition follows Babar Azam’s decision to step back as captain to concentrate on his batting form, especially ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025. Additionally, Salman Ali Agha has been promoted to vice-captain and will lead the T20 team in Zimbabwe, as Rizwan takes a rest in line with the PCB’s workload management plan. Meanwhile, key players such as Shaheen Afridi are expected to rejoin the squad for the Australia tour, although opener Fakhar Zaman may miss out due to fitness issues.
These leadership adjustments signal a strategic shift by the PCB as it aims to infuse fresh talent into the squad while leveraging Rizwan’s proven track record as a resilient captain.
